Dear Readers,
Thank you for visiting my site.
I’d like to share with you the story of my life’s journey that you can read about in my book called “Life On the Fringe - the almost naked memoir” 邊渡罒十年 available from Hong Kong University Press, and amazon.com. It’s about taking chances in turning a run-down ice cream parlour inside a cold storage warehouse into a vibrant and iconic contemporary arts space - Hong Kong Fringe Club. There, in forty years, tens of thousands of artists - emergent or already well-known - have come to perform and exhibit their works. I’d taken the Fringe from an open-access platform to morph into the City Festival, an urban culture festival; and Festival Without Walls, a homage to Andre Malraux, author of The Voices of Silence, who came up with this concept.
“The great mystery (of life) is not that we should have been thrown down here at random between the profusion of matter and that of the stars; it is that from our very prison we should draw, from our own selves, images powerful enough to deny our own nothingness.” - Andre Malraux
After all these years of managing the arts, I’m ready to do something I always love to dread: to become a creative writer, and in the process, learn to manage myself instead of other people’s artistic aspirations. Now it's time to look inward, to know who I really am, be truly comfortable in my own skin, and try to be free from the hindrances of this floating life.

Despite everything dark and brutal that happens in the world, time, like running water will eventually wash it off.

So throw away your baggage and go forward… Walk so lightly…on tiptoes and no luggage, not even a sponge bag, completely unencumbered.

Founder of Fringe Club Hong Kong 藝穗會
I founded the Hong Kong Festival Fringe in 1984, modelled after the Adelaide Festival Fringe, and turned the iconic ice house on Lower Albert Road in Central Hong Kong into a vibrant arts venue: the Fringe Club (藝穗會). The history of Fringe Club is covered in Benny Chia’s memoir “Life on the Fringe – The almost naked Memoir"
